The Arizona Trail Association offers regular opportunities for volunteers to help with many areas of the cross-state Arizona Trail. Trail maintenance/building projects are planned each month by the passage stewards and they need your help. Jan 27th - FREE REI Clinic: Pack Light, Pack Right - 6:30 PM at the Tempe Store. Is your pack too heavy? Would you like to know how to pack lightly but still be comfortable and perhaps even have room for a few extras? An REI backpacking expert will provide tips for reducing pack weight without sacrificing product performance or overall comfort. Pack Light, Pack Right reflects the continuing evolution of the light-gear concept. Sat. Jan. 30th - Leaving Your Mark Is Overrated: The Leave No Trace Adventure- 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area(7th Ave N/E trailhead) in Phoenix. Learn how to enjoy the outdoors while protecting the land you love. Leave No Trace is an educational program designed to help outdoor recreationists understand and minimize their impact on the land, and thereby preserve the quality of the outdoor experience for all. Sat. Feb 6th - Volunteer Event: Saguaro National Park East Weedwackers Beat Back Buffelgrass Day! - Saguaro National Park in Tucson. Join Saguaro National Park in the manual removal of buffelgrass from infested Park lands.This is a REGION WIDE annual event!! Go to www.buffelgrass.org for more details. Sat. Feb 6th - New Hope Cattle Dogs Rescue's 3rd Cattle Dog Round Up - Desert Hills, AZ. It will be a fun filled day meeting fellow cattle dog enthusiasts and the many New Hope Cattle Dogs volunteers. They look forward to meeting past (and future) adopters as well as our rescued dogs. All friendly and well behaved dogs are welcome as long as they are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and on a leash. The event is on a Ranch style property, so there is very limited grass. Please bring lawn chairs and an old blanket for your dog. A crate is not required, but it will give you a break, as well as your dog. Once again we are offering our commemorative 2010 Cattle Dog Round Up t-shirt! This years design shows our furry friends most recognized play traits. Nose bonking, body slamming, heeling kind of fun. T-shirts are $10. Please note that we will NOT be selling t-shirts at the event - YOU MUST PRE-ORDER YOUR T-SHIRTS and they’ll be distributed on event day. Sunday, February 14th - 2010 Heart to Heart Pet-a-Rama - 9 am - 2 pm in Downtown Phoenix. The Heart to Heart Pet-a-Rama is a 2-mile fundraising walk in the park. Saturday, Feb. 20th - Peoria Outdoor Adventure: Hell's Canyon Wilderness Day Hike - 6 to 7 miles RT - Moderate - Elevation 2,200 up to 3,200 ft. Meeting time is 8 am at the Rio Vista Recreation Center (89th Ave. N. of Thunderbird in Peoria, AZ). (Estimated return time: 4pm)
This wilderness area northwest of Lake Pleasant offers rugged beauty and an abundant showing of wildflowers if we catch it in a good year. There are a few trail options, so we'll decide what type of adventure we want when we get to the trailhead. Please bring at least 2 litres of water, a lunch, a daypack or fanny pack and your day hiking essentials. NOT open to beginners. No dogs please.
Sponsored by City of Peoria Parks and Rec. Dept. Cost is $15 for Peoria residents and $18 for non-residents. Saturday, Feb. 20th - 9th Annual Arizona Animal Fair - 10am-4pm at Reid Park (NE corner of 22nd St./Country Club in Tucson).Hosted by Saving Animals from Euthanasia (SAFE), the Arizona Animal Fair is the largest event of its kind in Arizona and one of the largest in the Southwest. Featuring animal demonstrations, exhibitors, Super Adoptions with 30+ animal rescue agencies, entertainment, food court plus live music in the beer garden, this festive event celebrating all animals is FREE for people and pets. Police K-9s, Flyball, lure coursing, freestyle doggie dancing, dog training demos and pet safety seminars for children will all be featured. Low-cost vaccinations and microchipping available. Plenty of horses, burros, llamas and even potbellied pigs for the public to pet. Puppy Pawcasso, a pet psychic, Glamour Paws Pet Photography and other fun activities for people and pets. Humane Society of Southern AZ Yappy Hour - Saturday evenings
Yappy Hour is a fun-filled evening of excitement for pooches and their people with light food and taste tempting treats for the pups. Four-legged canine companions can make new doggie friends while playing in the outdoor grassy yards, participate in dog games and contests and play on pooch agility equipment. Silent Sundays - The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is proud to present "Silent Sunday" at South Mountain Park/Preserve and at North Mountain Park. We invite you to come and enjoy these free "non-motorized" recreation events! We will be hosting a "Silent Sunday" event each month in 2009. Bicyclists, wheelchair users, in-line skaters, tots in strollers, horseback riders, walkers, hikers, etc, get to call the roadways of these two parks their own during these events! The goals of Silent Sunday are to promote awareness of alternative modes of recreation and transportation, and to give the parks a day of rest from motor vehicle traffic. Guided/Ranger Led Hikes

Lost Dutchman State Park - Saturdays at 9am for about 2-3 hours. Native plants, animals and legends of the Superstition Mountains. Upcoming Moonlight hikes on 3/5 and 4/3 from 7-9pm. 2.5-mile ranger-led hike by moonlight followed by a campfire. Call 480-982-4485 for more details. Friendly leashed dogs are usually welcome, call ahead.

South Mountain Park - Discover the South Mountain Preserve and reward yourself after a hard week of working. They offer interpretive hikes as well as Hiking Healthy treks which are hike-at-your-own-pace. Cost is $5.00 per person (exception: Dinner at Dobbins), payable on the day of the hike. For additional information or to register for any hike, call 602.534.6324. Friendly leashed dogs are very welcome on all South Mtn. trails.

Pueblo Grande Museum Hikes at South Mountain Park
View rock art and ruins. Hikes start at 7a.m. at the trailhead. You have to register and pay in advance ($5 for non-members, Free for members). They show this as kid-friendly, not sure about the dogs. Call first. 602-495-0900 for more info. Hikes are 3 mi. approx. and last about 3 hours. www.pueblogrande.com.

The following Maricopa County Parks offer Ranger led hikes that vary in length, level and focus. Most of these areas offer interpretive, bird watching, indian ruin, early bird, full moon and fitness hikes throughout the month for only the entrance fee into the park. Some also offer various Ranger hosted seminars covering topics like, wildlife, history, geology, survival, and edible plants. Friendly leashed dogs are usually welcome, call ahead.
